shop the sale

Here’s a great money saving habit to pick up, build your groceries and meals for the week around what’s on sale at your local grocery store. I first saw this on Oprah from a famed coupon clipper who also used coupons for these sale items and even went to stores that doubled coupons. Now I know this isn’t practical for a lot of people, including me, since a) I don’t receive the newspaper, and b) I don’t have time to clip coupons and keep up with them (sidenote: she did mention that you could buy the Sunday paper for the coupons).

Start by looking at your local sale papers before making your grocery list. Yes, a grocery list (it helps prevent impulse purchases while at the store). You can even have the weekly circulars emailed straight to your inbox! Ahh, the wonders of technology! Harris Teeter even emails me the circular with sale items that are similar to my previously purchased items right in the body of the email. I then decide between Harris Teeter & Giant based on what I want to make that week or what grocery items I already have in mind. Then I make my list and off to the store I go. So far this year, I’ve saved a little over $100 by only shopping the sale and it’s only mid-February!

So my advice is easy…simply Shop the Sale. It’s as simple and {budget}fab* as that. Try to buy what’s on sale, and only what’s on sale. It’s only one week and next week something different will be on sale. This will also help you to be more creative and not get bored with cooking and/or taking your lunch to work. There are items that won’t be on sale that you’ll need…and you should still get them, but try to be more mindful of actually building around what’s on sale and watch the savings grow!
