the district… for the kiddies

My 10 year old cousin is coming to stay with me one weekend with summer.  She’s an incredibly fun little girl and very bright , so I really want her time spent in DC to be a blast.  I’ve been trying to figure out what we can do during her stay.  For those of you who have little ones, or may be hosting a young person in the DC area, here are 10 {budget}fab* things to do with kids in DC I’ve come across and wanted to share with you!

  1. Try DC By Foot!  They offer guided walking tours, infused with games and trivia, around the National Mall area twice a day.  Cost - FREE! (gratuity recommended)
  2. To avoid the stress of driving around the city and finding parking, buy a Metrorail 1-day pass for just $7.80
  3. National Zoo - FREE!
  4. National Museum of Natural History - FREE!
  5. Visit Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.  It’s a great place to take fun pics!  Swing by your local CVS Pharmacy counter before you head over, they often have a buy 1 ticket, get 1 free coupon.
  6. DC food blog, Metrocurean, has a fantastic post on foodie events for kids.  Check it out here
  7. Visit an area farmers market, allow the little one to pick some of their favorite fruits and/or veggies, and make a salad to go with a dinner you serve one evening.  Salad is super simple and kids get a kick out of helping in the kitchen!
  8. Rent a paddle boat from Tidal Basin Paddle Boats and enjoy sites of the Jefferson Memorial and cherry trees.  $10/hr for a 2 passenger boat, $16/hr for a 4 passenger boat.  Click here for more details.
  9. Lunch and a movie!  Save a few bucks by going out to eat for lunch instead of dinner and a matinee movie.
  10. Check out the Discovery Theater. Shows range from tap dance performances to puppet show workshops, AND tickets are always under $10.  Click here for a calendar of events.

Do you know of any kid-friendly events in DC/VA/MD?

Janelle, after commenting on Facebook with some idea I’m here again. I googled ’site seeing in Wasgington DC’ and found more thing for you to do with you cousin. The best site was http://www.washington.org. You should find enough free things for you and your cousin as well as your BFF’s. Having spent many a day touring DC with only bus fare home to Alex and cheese crackers in my pocket, plus a little loose change, your post brought back many happy memories.

Be sure to let us (FACEBOOK) know how the visit goes. If you need any other input let me know.

    A fan in Georgia.

Thanks again Floy! I will definitely check out washington.org and be sure to give an update on how the weekend went. My goal is to earn the title of the “Coolest Cousin Ever”. :)
