diy save the dates & invitations

A great way to pinch pennies is to do things yourself. Instead of paying for both the materials AND the labor to do something, you pay for just the materials. Stationery/paper is a big part of any wedding - save the dates, invites, programs, menus, table numbers, placecards, etc. The cost of these things can quickly add up. So, here are some budget-friendly sources for do-it-yourself save the dates and invitations…
This super cool vintage Save the Date postcard can be downloaded for FREE courtesy of Wedding Chicks. Click the link for directions on how to add your information and how to print.
Also from Wedding Chicks, download this Butterfly themed wedding invitation suite (invite and rsvp card) for free. Click here for the download and directions. For more free, do-it-yourself templates from the wonderful folks behind Wedding Chicks, click here.
Another way to go is to purchase wedding invitation kits and print your invitations at home. Check out places like Target, Michaels and/or A.C. Moore (I was just there - they had tons of options) for these kits. Prices are usually around $25 - $30 for 50 invites. (The kit shown above is from Target)
Are you a graphic designer or have a friend with some design abilities? Try designing your own save the date magnet and working with a company to have them printed. I have personally designed a save the date magnet and had them printed via VistaPrint. The pricing is fab*, the turnaround is quick and the quality is great. For example, the cost to print 100 custom magnets - $50 + $5 custom design fee + shipping = under $1 per magnet!
**Tip - Want to add a little luxe to your DIY invitations? The answer… ribbon. Use the ribbon to tie around your invitation, response card, etc. or to amp up the invitation specifically, punch two holes along the top or side of the invitation and tie the ribbon that way.
One thing to keep in mind - DIY isn’t always the most cost or time efficient way to go. For very big or complex projects it may actually be more cost effective and/or less stress to hire a professional. Be sure to realistically consider the amount of work you’ll have to do before beginning any do-it-yourself project.
